“JSL has signed a contract with ReNew Power to develop a utility-scale captive renewable energy project for the supply of power to its facility in Jajpur, Odisha.”

JSL statement

Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), on 05 December 2022, has signed an agreement with the renowned renewable energy company, ReNew Power, to install a 300 MW captive renewable energy project to power the facility in Jajpur, Odisha.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed in the presence of Chairman, Jindal Stainless Limited, Mr Ratan Jindal, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless Limited, Mr Abhyuday Jindal, and Founder, Chairman, and CEO, ReNew Power, Mr Sumant Sinha.

The project will generate 700 million units per year through a mix of technologies of wind and solar energy generation. The generated power will be supplied to JSL’s facility in Jajpur. JSL (in collaboration RENew Power) expects to commence the commercial operation of the project by May 2024. This would likely to aid in carbon abatement by over 6.5 lakh tones per year.

This initiative is part of JSL’s plan of switching from thermal energy-intensive manufacturing setup to renewable energy alternatives such as solar and wind power in states like Odisha, Haryana and Rajasthan.

“We are delighted to partner with JSL in developing renewable energy sources for the Indian manufacturing sector. We believe this unique model will revolutionise the way power is procured by corporate India. This innovative Wind-Solar hybrid system will accelerate the adoption of clean energy in a hard-to-abate sector.”
