Public hearing held for Jindal Steel’s Angul Steel Plant

The public hearing meeting was conducted successfully for Jindal Steel Odisha Limited’s (JSOL) Integrated steel plant at Angul on 28 September 2022.

Around 30 representatives of almost 15 villages were participated in the meeting. The representatives were emphasised on provision of employment, protection of the environment and more CSR activities in the area. They also demanded a super speciality hospital, technical university and more compensation to the project-affected people. Jindal Steel officials assured to construct a multi-specialty hospital in the area soon. A proposal in this regard has been submitted to the government. Regional officer of State Pollution Control Board Anup Mallik of the view that, the public hearing was conducted peacefully and there was no opposition from the locals. Those who spoke at the meet were in favour of the steel project.

The Public Hearing is necessary to get people’s consent for obtaining environmental clearance for the mega steel project.

Jindal Steel is planning to establish a 19.2 million tonne Integrated Steel Plant in Angul. Post completion, the capacity of JSOL’s steel plant at Angul will be enhanced to 25.2 million tonne per annum. Around Rs 1,19,952 crore will be invested for the expansion project and 9,400 direct employments will be generated including unskilled, semi-skilled from the local area & skilled personnel from the local areas and from outside.

About the Expansion Project

The proposed expansion project involves setting up of 19.2 million tonne per annum (million tpa) integrated steel plant. This will include, expansion of the pellet plant from 5.0 million tpa to 26.0 million tpa and Hot Rolling Mill from 3.1 million tpa to 21.1 million tpa at Basudevpur, Panpur, Kaliakata Jungle, Kaliakata, Ramadih, Sankerjang, Sankerjang Jungle, Badakerjang, Badakerjang Jungel, Jamunda, Jamunda Jungle, Paripara and Jarada village of Banarpal and Chhendipada Block of Angul district.

The steel plant will have 5.4 million tpa DRI Plant, 11.5 million tpa Sinter Plant, 5.17 million tpa Coke Oven, 14.0 million tpa, Blast Furnace, 6.0 million tpa, EAF, 13.2 million tpa, BOF 1.2 million tpa, Wire Rod Mill 7.5 million tpa, CRM 7200  tonne per day, Calcination Plant 11,000 tonne per day, Oxygen Plant, a 550 MW Captive Power Plant, 0.376 million tpa Ferro Alloys Plant and 1.5 million tpa Cement Plant.

In addition, the company will set up a complete Zero Effluent Discharge system, in which Industrial Effluent and water will be recycled and reused. All environmental components will be routinely monitored as per the law.
