SEZ planned in Gopalpur

Indian Express reports, the State Government of Orissa, is contemplating to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) at Gopalpur in Ganjam district to create employment opportunities for 30,000 youths.

Official sources said that the SEZ would boost the chances of industrialisation of the district. The district has not attracted many investors though the State Government signed 49 memoranda of understanding (MoU) for establishment of steel plants.
The SSL Energy Limited which had signed an MoU with the State Government for establishment of a steel plant in Angul district has proposed to change the location to Palur in Ganjam district. However, a decision is yet to be taken by the Government on this proposal.
The highest number of 10 steel plants have been proposed to be established in Keonjhar district which includes the project by ArcelorMittal India Limited.
While MoUs have been signed with eight companies to locate steel plants in Jajpur district, seven projects will be established in Dhenkanal district.
Similarly, seven plants each have been proposed to be set up in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts. Sambalpur district will have five plants, while Cuttack will have four projects.
Out of the 49 companies, 19 are eligible for getting captive mines.
